Vernon Acklie, 79, formerly of Johnson City, died Friday, May 24, 2017, at Belvedere Commons Assisted Living, Franklin, following a lengthy illness.Vernon was a native of Niobra, NE, and has been a resident of Johnson City for over thirty years.He was a son of the late Peter and Bernice Nelson Acklie.Vernon was a Vietnam War veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served more than twenty years, retiring as Chief Petty Officer. Following retirement, he was a former greeter at Wal-Mart.Vernon formerly attended Mt. Bethel Christian Church and Lynnwood Church of Christ.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of forty-eight years, Lena Mae Acklie, in 2014, and his brother, Jim Acklie.Vernon is survived by two sons, Arthur Acklie and wife Rhonda, Franklin, and Kyle Acklie, Greeneville.The graveside funeral service will be held Friday, May 31, 2019, at 1:00 P.M., in Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by members of the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Team and the Carter County Honor Guard.
