Thomas "Tom" Smith, Jr., age 79. Of Johnson City, went to be with his Lord on May 1, 2016 at NHC Health Care, Johnson City, after a brief bout with cancer. Tom was a native of Madison, VA, but spent most of his adult life in Tennessee. A graduate of Lynchburg University, he served as Master Sergeant in the US Army while stationed in Germany. He began his career in the accounting profession and worked with several companies in the Southeast. After retirement, he spent time with family and his various hobbies. He enjoyed his involvement with his Central Baptist Churchy family, and working with the Unicoi Shrine Club, Especially in activities concerned with the Shriners Children's Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jackson Smith and Delores Graves Smith, of Madison, VA; one sister, Frances Grubbs of Falls Church, VA. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 50 years, Mary Carter Smith, of Johnson City; son, Jason Smith and wife Carolyn, of Atlanta, GA; Grandchildren, Jaelyn and Andy Smith, Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law, Helen Stanton, Johnson City; nephew, David Stanton and wife Melanie; niece, Audrey Stanton; and nephew Austin Stanton, all of Johnson City. The graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Monte Vista Memorial Park with Minister Tim Tapp officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:45 A.M. Wednesday.
