Patsy Matherly Christian, 74, Gray, died Monday, September 23, 2019, in Kingsport at the residence of a sister, following a brief illness. Patsy was a native of the Boones Creek community of Gray, where she lived most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Hobert Matherly, Sr. and Susie Johnson Matherly. Patsy was retired from Wal-Mart, where she worked as a stocker. Following retirement, she enjoyed working with the Habitat for Humanity. She was a very active and loyal member of Boones Creek Baptist Church, where she served on the Revitalization Committee. Patsy loved her church, especially when volunteering in the kitchen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Allen Christian, Jr., in 2003, and ten siblings, Robert Matherly, Bessie Matherly, Mary Lantz, Fred Matherly, Hobert Matherly, Jr., Howard Matherly, Walter Matherly, Terry Matherly, Janie Newton, and Hazel Matherly. Patsy is survived by three sisters, Sue Fields and husband William, Kingsport, Edith Giebelstein and husband David, Clinton, IA, Sandy Stayer and husband Ronnie, Telford; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family would like to express a very special thank you to Brandon and Josh Deal. The funeral service will be conducted Friday, September 27, 2019, at 7:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. Jason Royston, officiating. Special music will be provided by Virginia Barnes. The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from 5:00-7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside committal service will be held Saturday at 11:00 A.M., in Boones Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from Patsy’s nephews. Those planning to attend are to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M. Saturday. In-lieu-of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Boones Creek Baptist Church, 304 Pickens Bridge Rd., Johnson City, TN 37615, to be used for the kitchen, which would please Patsy very much.
