Nellie Juanita Matherly, 88, Johnson City, died Saturday, March 3, 2024, at Agape Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center, following a lengthy illness.Juanita was a native of Washington County. She lived in Johnson City for many years before moving to Columbia, SC, where she and her family lived for twenty-eight years before returning to this area in Jonesborough. Jaunita was a daughter of the late Hiram Delaney and Pearl Elizabeth Murray Arnett.She worked as a Waitress in both Johnson City and Columbia before her retirement.Juanita was a member of Boones Creek Baptist Church.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Eugene Matherly, Sr., in 2005, four children, Robert Eugene Matherly, Jr., Nancy Craig, Debra Jean Matherly, and Teresa Matherly, a sister, Georgia Gray.Juanita is survived by one daughter, Melissa Frazier, Johnson City; eight grandchildren, Mandy Cooper and Alexandra Ferrell, both of Rock Hill, SC, Timothy Ferrell, Mississippi, Adam Hale, West Columbia, SC, Crystal Williams and Robert Eugene Matherly, III, both of Pontiac, SC, Elizabeth Bogart, Johnson City, and Danielle Donaldson, Auckland, New Zealand; fifteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frankie Fagan, Johnson City, and Ruth Broyles, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews.The graveside funeral service for Juanita will be held Friday, March 8, 2024, at 2:30 P.M., in Boones Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, with Evangelist Charles “Toonie” Cash and Pastor Jason Royston, officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home, then proceed to the cemetery for the service.It was Juanita’s request that in-lieu-of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Tennessee Chapter at www.alz.org.
