Larry "Smokey" Sluder, 68, Johnson City, died Monday, December 21, 2015, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, following a lengthy illness. Smokey was a native of Johnson City and a son of the late Carl and Willie Long Sluder. He was an avid family man. Smokey was a local favorite bookie and loved gambling, football season and playing golf. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, Smokey was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Lea Grace Sluder in 2010, two sons, Larry Ray Sluder and Carl Chance Sluder, one daughter, Marie Cordell. He is survived by one daughter, Rhonda Sluder, Johnson City; one brother, Tony Sluder, Piney Flats; one niece, Carly Sluder, Piney Flats; one granddaughter, Beth Turner; one grandson, Matthew Cordell; two great-grandchildren; special friends, Tammy Hurt, Lisa Oliver, Jeff McKinney, Robert Cox and Kimberly Johnson, Christine Dugger, and his pet and best friend, Toby Sluder The family would like to thank the staff of Franklin Woods Community Hospital, especially Dr. Nicolas Lee, the P.C.U. Nurses, and Mountain States Hospice. The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 26, 2015, at 7:00P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. Rusty Wishon, officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday prior to the service from 5:00- 7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside committal service will be held Sunday at 1:00 P.M. in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be James Howard Tucker, Jr., Jamie Heaton, Sam "Rat" Ford, Jonathan Dugger, and Zack Buckles. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Arrowood, Jeff McKinney, Robert Cox, James Tucker, Sr., Chuck Harris, Gary Ward, Michael Hawkins, Ronnie Heaton and Danny Chandler. Those planning to attend are to meet at the funeral home Sunday by 12:30 P.M. to proceed to the cemetery.
