Janie Matherly Newton, 61, Gray, died Thursday, December 17, 2015, at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a brief illness. Janie was a native of Johnson City and a lifelong resident of Washington County, She was a daughter of the late Hobert and Susie Johnson Matherly. Janie attended Boones Creek High School thru the eleventh grade, then attended Daniel Boone High School for her senior year, and was a member of its first graduating class. She retired from Food City in Piney Flats earlier this year and was formerly employed with Ingles for several years and Rolf's Cafeteria for more than twenty years. Janie was a longtime active member of Boones Creek Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, assisted with Bible School and kept the nursery. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dale Williamsen, six brothers, Robert, Fred, Junior, Howard, Walter and Terry Matherly, three sisters, Bessie and Hazel Matherly, Mary Lantz. Janie is survived by four sisters, Patsy Christian, of the home, Sue Fields, Kingsport, Edith Giebelstein, Iowa, and Sandy Stayer, Telford; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Monday, December 21, 2015, at 7:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. Kenneth Kyker officiating. The family will receive friends Monday prior to the service from 5:00-7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside committal service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. in Boones Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeff, Bill, Scott and Tommy Matherly, Tim and Chris Stayer, Brian Fields, David Jr. and Bruce Giebelstein, Brandon and Robert Deal.
