James Nellis Oakes, 81, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 28, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born to the late Edward and Pearl Oakes. James proudly served his country in the United States Army. During his time of service, he was stationed in Germany. James was of the Pentecostal faith. James retired from Klopman Mills. He enjoyed woodworking. In addition to his parents James was preceded in death by his sisters; Easter Trivette, Edith Walker Trivette, and Alice Collins, brothers; Raynear, Raymond, and Charles Oakes, great grandson; Kyler Ray Johnson. He is survived by loving wife of 57 years; Linda Oakes, daughters; Lisa Nelson and Regina Hilton, granddaughter; Clarinda Johnson, grandson; Weldon Hilton, great granddaughters; Kaylee and Kenzie Johnson, Kendra Garden, great grandson; Kayson Yontz. The Oakes family will gather to greet friends and share memories on Monday, June 1, 2020 in the West Chapel of Appalachian Funeral from 1:00pm-2:30pm. A Graveside Service will follow the visitation at Washington County Memory Gardens beginning at 3:00pm with Brother Johnny Burleson officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. All those who wish to attend is asked to practice social distancing and take all possible precautions. The Oakes family would like extend a special thank you to Kerri Garcia, Angie Cutshall, and Jeffery Fox for all their exceptional care of James.
