Boones Creek- James W. “Jim” Matherly, age 86, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital. Jim was born in Boones Creek, the youngest child of John and Blanch Matherly. He lived on the family farm, in the same house, for his entire life. A life-long farmer, he and his older brother, Bob, made a great team, raising plants, produce, cattle and tobacco. Always generous, Jim continued to raise a large garden for many years after his retirement from commercial farming, mainly for the purpose of giving produce away. Somewhat quiet, he was always observant and often demonstrated a keen, dry sense of humor. A graduate of Boones Creek High School, where he was an athlete, he maintained a life-long interest in sports. Jim is survived by his sister, Helen Armentrout; nephews Russell Armentrout, Kelly Carroll, James (Bluegill) Matherly and Michael Oliver; nieces Diane Matherly and Sloane Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Sara (Pat) Matherly, Charity (Chad) Matherly, Robert Matherly, Wright Matherly, Jay Matherly, Rhea Barnes, Olivene Oliver, Mary Carroll and Phillip Matherly; and half-brother Herman Matherly. A visitation of friends will be held at 12:30 on Sunday, November 10, at Appalachian Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 2:00, officiated by Evangelist Charles “Toonie” Cash, followed by the burial service at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Russell Armentrout, Bill Matherly, Greg Matherly, James (Bluegill) Matherly, John Matherly and Michael Oliver. In-lieu-of flowers, donations may be sent to Boones Creek Baptist Church (Cemetery Fund), 304 Pickens Bridge Rd., Johnson City, TN 37615.
