James Lee "Jimmy" Moates, III, 56, Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. Jimmy was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was a son of James Lee "Jim" Moates, Jr., Johnson City, and the late Gertrude "Red" Carder Moates. Jimmy was a 1979 graduate of Science Hill High School, and then received his Associate Degree from Northeast State Technical Community College. He was currently employed with East Tennessee State University, and was previously employed with Kennametal Inc. for thirty-one years. Jimmy also worked part-time at Ingle's in Boones Creek. He enjoyed mowing for his family, friends and neighbors. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, and attended Fountain of Life Bible Church. Jimmy was an avid runner and cyclist, which he loved. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Lisa Alexander Moates; his daughter, Megan Alexandra Moates, of the home; his sister, Tina Moates Roberts and husband John, Madison, AL; his brother, Thomas Mark Moates and wife Ginger, Boones Creek; nieces and nephews, John Jr., Michael, Hollie and Eliese Roberts, Hunter and Leeli Moates, Andrew Hodge, Spencer and Emma Kincaid; aunts, Dot Self and Katherine Elkins; and his "little buddy" Reece, his dog. Funeral services for Jimmy will be conducted Friday, February 17, 2017, at 8:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Dr. Vic Young, officiating. The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from 6:00-8:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside committal service will be held Saturday at 1:00 P.M. in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Hunter Moates, Michael Roberts, John Roberts, Jr., Spencer Kincaid, Andrew Hodge and Gabe Hirsch. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Nave, Terry Campbell, David Bacon, Mike Pope, Teresa & Gerry Duffy, Crystal Landers, the Tri-City Turtles and his running community. Those planning to attend are to meet at the funeral home by 12:30 P.M. Saturday to proceed to the cemetery. I'm so saddened and shocked to learn of Jimmy's passing. I worked with him several years ago at Kennametal and then had the privilege of seeing him at Ingles on shopping day. He always made you smile. I know he will be missed. Cheri Sprinkle

Jimmy was always pleasant to talk with and I enjoyed seeing him in Dossett. He will be deeply missed. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
My heart goes out to Jimmy's family, and I wish them strength through this process. Jimmy's infectious smile will be missed at ETSU. I loved be you, Tina.
