James G. Brummett, 91, Gray, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, following a brief illness. James was a native of Unicoi County, former resident of Erwin, and lived in Flat Rock, Michigan most of his life before moving to Gray in 1992. He was a son of Henry Austin and Martha Phillips Brummett.James was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He retired in 1986 from the Chrysler Corporation where he worked as a machine operator for thirty-five and a half years. James was a longtime member of the United Auto Workers Local #372, Trenton, MI. He was a member of Boones Creek Baptist Church and the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class.In Addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred “Millie” Gortney Brummett, in 2016, an infant daughter, Karen Brummett, three brothers, infant Lindy Brummett, Joseph Galbraith and Robert Austin Brummett, two sisters, Vearl Helton and Uteta Harris. He is survived by his son, John W. Brummett and wife Cheryl, Brownsville, TX; his daughter, Billie Jo Shutters, El Cajon, CA; six grandchildren, Rebekah Brummett Hawk, Flat Rock, MI, Lisah Brummett DeSenglau, Chesterfield, MI, Janel Brummett Takacs, Southgate, MI, Beth Coon Long, El Cajon, CA, Jimmy Brummett, Portland, OR, and Jackie Bolam Walker, Lincoln, MI; thirteen great-grandchildren, Hayden, Trinity, Gavin, Kai, Collin, Avery, River, Jasmine, Riker, Lily, Connor, Nora and Hunter; several nieces and nephews; close family friend, Cora Beaumont. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 1:30 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. Kenneth Kyker, officiating. The graveside committal service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Erwin, with Rev. Jason Royston officiating. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Brummett, Jim Takacs, Ron Bray, Fred Malone, Bill Riddle, Mike Chapman and Johnny Fields. The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday from 12:00-1:30 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. Those who prefer to make donations in-lieu-of flowers, please do so to Boones Creek Baptist Church, 304 Pickens Bridge Rd., Johnson City, TN 37615. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.appfh.net. Appalachian Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 800 E.
