Hobert S. Mitchell, 90, Piney Flats, died Saturday, March 21, 2020, at The Waters of Johnson City. Hobert was a native of Johnson City and was a son of the late John Ira and Maude Irene Briggs Mitchell. He was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran, retiring in 1967 as a Petty Officer First Class, following twenty-two years of service to his country. Following his retirement from the Navy, Hobert worked as a Flood Control Specialist for the State of Florida Management District for twenty-four years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Piney Flats First Baptist Church. Hobert enjoyed traveling with family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Genevieve Broyles Mitchell in 1990, his second wife, Juanita Brewer Mitchell in 2000, two brothers, Joe and Ralph Mitchell, two sisters, Ruby Sanders and Queenie Chandler. Hobert is survived by nieces, Patsy Bailey and husband Wayne, Johnson City, Phyllis Hackworth and husband John, Goodview, VA; nephews, Phillip Mitchell and wife Karen, Bluffton, SC, Harvey Mitchell and wife Barbara, Jonesborough, Donnie Mitchell and wife Marie, Johnson city, Ronnie Mitchell and wife Janet, Johnson City, Rick Mitchell and wife Yvonne, Pinehurst, NC; several great-nieces and nephews; step-daughter, Sue Mays and husband Wayne, Johnson City; step-grandchildren, Roy Wayne Mays, GA, and Jamie Greene, Johnson City; step-great-grandchildren, Warren and Alyssa Greene, Johnson City. Due to the current mandated restrictions related to gatherings, the services for Hobert will be privately held at Appalachian Funeral Home, with interment following in Mountain Home National Cemetery. In-lieu-of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
