Helen H. Shumate Cobble, age 95, of Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the Cornerstone Village, Johnson City, following a brief illness. A native of Kimball, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Mark Halford and Willie Lowe Hendrick. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Cobble was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College. She volunteered with the Red Cross's Blood Mobile. Mrs. Cobble was the first woman that served on the Johnson City Zoning Commission, and also served as a Cub Scouts Den Mother for many years. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, William F. Shumate; second husband, Hugh Cobble; a son, William F. Shumate, Jr. Survivors include a son, Mark H. Shumate, Johnson City; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Shumate Essick (Charles E. Essick), Houston, TX; Grandchildren, W. Riess Shumate, Brentwood, TN, Charles D. Shumate, Franklin, TN, Elizabeth G. Shumate Sexton, Knoxville, TN, Leigh Ann Shumate Branham, Fishersville, VA, Mark H. Shumate, Jr., Stanton VA, Charles E. Essick, II and Thomas C. Essick, both of Houston, TX; Eight Great Grandchildren; Step-children, Charles and Connie Cobble, Douglas and Brenda Cobble, all of Greeneville, Donald and Nadine Cobble, Knoxville. The memorial service for Mrs. Cobble will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, April 11, 2016 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Dr. Tommy Hood officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. in the chapel prior to the service.
