Gary Ayers, II, Jonesborough, died unexpectedly Sunday, December 12, 2021, at his home. Gary was a native of Elmira, NY, and a son of Gary Frederick Ayers, Elmira Heights, NY, and the late Patricia Bunn Ayers VanHorn. He was a 1983 graduate of Windsor High School, Windsor, VA, and attended Paul D. Camp Community College before joining the U.S. Army. Gary was the proud owner and operator of SNAGFA Trucking, which allowed him to live his passion of being on the “open road” driving. He was an avid bowler and loved competing in the leagues at Holiday Lanes, which included the Senior and Wednesday night “Happy Hour” leagues. In addition to his mother, Gary was preceded in death by an infant brother, two uncles, and his step-father, David Nelson VanHorn, who raised him. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of thirty years, Sabrina Ayers; four children, Robert Widegren (Lezlie), Dayton, OH, Gary Groves, Portsmouth, VA, Samantha Ayers (Matthew Greene), Gray, and Evelyn Ayers, Jonesborough; four grandchildren, Audrey and Enoch Widegren, Owen Alexander Greene and Meah Nicole Greene; one brother, William VanHorn (Samantha), Ivor, VA; one sister, Patricia Caughran (Timothy), Johnson City; nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Saturday, December 18, 2021, from 1:00-3:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home. The family requests that in-lieu-of flowers, monetary donations please be made in Gary’s name to the funeral home to assist the family with his final expenses.
