Elgie Lee “Mickey” Bennett, 73, Jonesborough, died after a lengthy illness on Friday, March 26, 2021, at his home with his loving family by his side. Mickey was a native and lifelong resident of Jonesborough. He was the son of the late Roscoe and Addie Bell Crowe Bennett. Mickey was a Disabled American Veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 - 1968. He received his Associates degree in Theology from Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, TN. and a B.S. degree in Business from Elizabethton Business College. He was a member of New Harvest Missionary Baptist Church. Mickey loved to read and was an avid Bible reader and scholar. He spent many hours studying the Word of God. He never met a stranger. In fact, every person he met, he would witness to asking the question “If you were to die at this very moment where you be Heaven or Hell?” always telling them how to get to Heaven. He loved the Lord and lived his life for Him. Mickey will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents Mickey is preceded in death by three infant children, two sisters, Sarah Virginia Wilson and Rose Marie Oakman, brothers-in-law, Pat “Smurf” Mathes and JB Wilson. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Peggy Cullop Bennett; sons, Andy Lee Bennett and wife Laura, Chris Shannon Bennett and fiancé Wanda Mullins; grandchildren, Constance Nicole Bennett, Adam Bennett and wife Amanda, Dakota Bennett, Brittany Bennett; brothers, James F. Bennett and wife Marcella, John Stanley Bennett and wife Shirley, Robert Jack Bennett and wife Faye; sister Betty Mathes; brother-in-law, Doug Oakman; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a special furry friend, Sweet Pea. The funeral service for Mickey will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2021 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor David Dugger, Pastor Kenny Whaley and Rev. Terry Jones, officiating. Special music will be provided by The Singing Dugger’s. The family will receive family and friends prior to the service from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside committal service will follow in Mountain Home National Cemetery Annex. Special music will be provided by Pam Keeton. Pallbearers will be Adam Bennett, Dakota Bennett, Bobby Jack Bennett, Brandon Nave, Darrell Nelson and Jason Byrd. Honorary Pallbearers will be, Brian Byrd and Mitchell Grimes and Clyde Landon. The family would like to say a special thank you to the Avalon Hospice staff including nurses, Pandora, Mary, Debbie, Jackson and Dean; Social Worker Pam; and the staff at Home Instead.
