Charles Edward “Bud” Nickles, Sr., 72, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 6, 2020, at his residence. Bud was a native of Johnson City, where he resided most of his life. He was a son of the late Howard and Pauline Whaley Nickles. Bud retired in 2010 from the construction industry, where he worked as a Dry-Wall Mechanic for thirty-two years, and prior to that, was a welder for five years. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran, where he served in the Infantry during the Tet offensive. Bud was of the Holiness faith, loved his family, and was an avid golfer and hunter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard “Man Boy” Nickles, Jr., and Jackie Nickles, his father and mother-in-law, Wes and Louise Mays. Bud is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Barbara; three sons, Charles “Chuck” Nickles, Jr. and wife Angie, Elizabethton, Jamie Nickles and wife Heather Adkins, Johnson City, Randy Nickles and wife Amy, Elizabethton; two brothers, Johnny Nickles and wife Barbara, New York, Mike Nickles and wife Kim, Stoney Creek; three sisters, Rita Kent, Donna Nickles Blakley and husband Danny, all of Carter County, Ethel Shipley and husband Benny, Florence, SC; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January, 9, 2020, at 5:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. Johnny Nickles and Rev. Frank Laughren, officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday prior to the service from 3:00-5:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside committal service will be held Friday at 1:00 P.M. in Washington County Memory Gardens, with military honors being accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Chuck, Jamie and Randy Nickles, Nathaniel, Gabe and Austin Nickles, Josh Nickles, Jordan and Jackie Good, and Charlie Rambo. Those planning to attend are to meet at the funeral home by 12:30 P.M. Friday to proceed to the cemetery.
