Dolores Johnson Bowman, 91, Johnson City, went to be with her heavenly father, Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Brookdale Senior Living Center of Colonial Heights, following a lengthy illness.
Dolores was a native of Johnson City and a daughter of the late J. Frank and Nola Maine Johnson.
She was a former co-owner and office administrator of Bowman Jewelers.
Dolores was saved at age twelve and remained very active with church activities throughout her Christian life, which included singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, the Women’s Missionary Union and even attended Columbia Bible College at a young age, where she worked in the office in exchange for her room and board. Dolores was currently a member of Heritage Baptist Church.
She enjoyed riding motorcycles, and with her late husband, did so in all fifty states and Canada. They were life members of the Goldwing Road Riders Association.
In addition to her parents, Dolores was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years and love of her life, James J. “Denny” Bowman in 2017, three brothers, Frank Johnson, Jr., Dewey Johnson and Carl Johnson, a sister, Wanda Osborne.
She is survived by four children, Tina Bowman, Johnson City, Teresa Bowman Vanhooser and husband Mike, Rogersville, AL, Debbie Bowman Holtzclaw and husband Mike, Colonial Heights, James “Jay” Bowman, Jr., Johnson City; one brother, Louis Johnson, Johnson City; eight grandchildren, Kristen Young Stevens, Kayla Young, Jennifer Bowman, Heather Vanhooser Stockeland, Holly Vanhooser Harrell , Wesley Holtzclaw, Marielle Holtzclaw, and Christian Bowman; nine great-grandchildren, Dylan Young-Alford, Tyler & Luke Alford, Samantha Bowman, Ian Mathes, Blaine Dugger, Marlee Stevens, Jaxon Reynolds, and Carter Stockeland; several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Debbie Price and the friends and family who provided excellent, loving care for Dolores during her declining health.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 5:30 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Mr. Jack Tester, officiating. Special music will be provided by Dwight & Debra Whitworth.
The graveside committal service will be held Sunday at 10:30 A.M., in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Those planning to attend are to meet at the cemetery by 10:20 A.M.
The family will receive friends Saturday prior to the service from 4:00-5:30 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
